The root canal has a reputation it doesn’t deserve. In reality, modern root canal treatment is a routine, highly effective procedure that relieves severe tooth pain rather than causing it. At Toothland Dental in Brampton, Dr. Gurpreet Singh Jaura has helped hundreds of patients save teeth they feared they would lose — and the experience is far more comfortable than most people expect.
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp — becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed. This can result from deep decay that has reached the nerve, a crack in the tooth, or trauma. Left untreated, a tooth infection can spread to the surrounding bone and adjacent teeth, eventually requiring extraction. A root canal eliminates the infection and preserves the tooth.
The most recognized symptom is persistent toothache — particularly pain that intensifies when biting down, lingers after hot or cold stimulation, or wakes you at night. Swelling or tenderness in the gum near a specific tooth, darkening of the tooth, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum (a sinus tract indicating an abscess) are also common indicators.
What surprises many patients is that some infected teeth cause no pain at all — the nerve has died, and the infection spreads silently. This is why regular X-rays are an essential part of your dental checkups at Toothland Dental. We can detect infection on imaging before it becomes a crisis.
The procedure begins with local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. A small opening is created in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using fine, specialized instruments, Dr. Jaura carefully removes the infected or inflamed pulp tissue, then cleans and shapes each root canal. The canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and the tooth is sealed.
In most cases, a dental crown is recommended after root canal treatment. Teeth that have undergone endodontic therapy can become more brittle over time, and a crown restores full structural strength while sealing the tooth from reinfection. We’ll discuss this as part of your treatment plan.
Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the following morning. Some tenderness in the treated area is normal for two to three days and is typically managed with over-the-counter ibuprofen. The intense pre-treatment pain — the toothache that brought you in — is gone almost immediately after the procedure. Patients routinely tell us they wish they hadn’t waited as long as they did.
We recommend avoiding hard or crunchy foods on the treated side until your crown is placed, as the temporary restoration is not designed for heavy chewing loads. Crown placement typically follows within a few weeks.
When a tooth is extracted, the surrounding jawbone begins to resorb within months — the body reabsorbs bone it no longer needs to anchor a tooth. This can lead to shifting of adjacent teeth, changes in bite alignment, and eventually a more complex, more costly restoration. Whenever a tooth can be saved, saving it is the better long-term outcome — for both your oral health and your wallet.

The length of time for a root canal treatment can vary depending on the severity of the infection and the location of the affected tooth. On average, the procedure takes 1-2 hours to complete.
Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately following a root canal treatment. However, it’s recommended to avoid eating hard or chewy foods for the first few days and to take any prescribed pain medication as directed.
Like any medical procedure, there are potential risks involved with a root canal treatment. These can include infection, pain, swelling, and damage to surrounding teeth or tissues. Your dentist will discuss these potential complications with you before the procedure and provide instructions on how to minimize them.
